Overview

What is Polymyositis?

Polymyositis is a rare inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness on both sides of the body. It happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks your muscle tissues, leading to inflammation, pain, and gradual loss of strength, primarily in the trunk, shoulders, and hips.

Scope

Conditions Treated

We offer targeted therapies for a wide spectrum of related autoimmune and inflammatory conditions to ensure comprehensive relief.

  • 01Polymyositis (primary idiopathic)
  • 02Polymyositis associated with other autoimmune diseases (Overlap Syndromes)
  • 03Polymyositis with interstitial lung disease (ILD)
  • 04Refractory Polymyositis not responding to initial steroids
Eligibility

Who May Need This?

1

Adults experiencing symmetrical, progressive muscle weakness

2

Patients struggling to stand up from a chair or climb stairs

3

Individuals with unexplained difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

4

Those with elevated muscle enzymes (CPK, Aldolase) in blood tests

5

Patients experiencing muscle tenderness alongside fatigue

Mechanism

How Does It Work?

Treatment aims to rapidly control muscle inflammation to prevent permanent fibrosis (scarring). We begin with high-dose corticosteroids to quickly reduce inflammation, followed closely by steroid-sparing immunosuppressants (like Methotrexate or Azathioprine) for long-term control. Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) or biologic therapies may be used in severe or refractory cases.

  2. 2

Diagnostic Phase: Blood work, EMG, MRI, and potentially muscle biopsy

  3. 3

Week 1-4: High-dose steroid initiation for rapid inflammation control

  4. 4

Month 2-3: Introduction of steroid-sparing agents and tapering of steroids

  5. 5

Ongoing: Regular physical therapy and muscle enzyme monitoring

Diagnostics

Tests and Evaluation

Creatine Kinase (CPK) and Aldolase (Muscle enzymes)
Myositis-specific Autoantibodies (MSA panel)
Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies
MRI of affected muscles (to identify active inflammation)
